This micro-credential is offered as part of the programme for the Liberal Arts and Sciences and will only be offered subject to a minimum number of applications received. More information can be found on the PLAS website.

This Unit will present some of the main areas of inquiry in Philosophy; through the various topics delivered in this unit, participants will be able to understand the issues at hand and engage in stimulating debate.

The topics covered in this Unit include:

  • Art and its Value
  • The Birth of Modernity: The Thinking Subject, Science and Politics
  • Things in the world
  • Ways to God
  • The End of Humanity?
  • Philosophy as Consolation
  • Nietzsche, Foucualt and Agamben
  • The Philosophy of Economic Sustainability
  • Philosophy of Animals.

By the end of the Unit the student will be able to:

  • Appreciate the breadth and depth of philosophical problems and their history;
  • Identify and understand basic theories and concepts related to the topics discussed in the Unit;
  • Construct and develop sound and coherent arguments.

Learning Outcomes: Skills

By the end of the Unit the student will be able to:

  • Engage more meaningfully in philosophical discussions;
  • Employ appropriate thinking tools when addressing philosophical questions;
  • Apply analytical and critical skills learnt during the Unit.
